A shower floor needs a consistent slope toward the outlet across its whole area, with no flat spots and no reverse falls at the edges. Standing water is what stains grout, grows biofilm and eventually finds a weakness. This is measured with a level during construction rather than judged by eye afterwards.
A Centre Drain Means Four Planes
With the outlet in the middle, the floor falls from every side toward it, which means the tile has to bend across four sloping planes meeting at diagonal lines. Small format tile or mosaic handles that easily. Large format tile does not, because a rigid piece cannot sit flat on two planes at once.
A Linear Drain Means One Plane
Put the outlet in a channel along one edge and the whole floor becomes a single sheet falling in one direction. Large tiles work, the floor can match the rest of the bathroom, and the visual break is a single line. That simplicity is why linear drains have largely taken over, and it is a plumbing decision made at rough in.
How Much Depth Is Available
Fall requires depth, and depth is whatever exists between the finished floor level and the structure below. On a concrete slab, achieving it usually means cutting the slab to drop the trap and the branch. On a suspended floor it means working within joist depth without cutting anything structural. Establish which situation applies before drawing the shower.
Curbless Needs Planning, Not Just Willingness

Hinged Doors Need Room Outside

Sliders and the Track
A slider needs no clearance and it introduces a bottom track, which is a channel that collects water and residue and has to be cleaned. Top hung barn style systems remove the bottom track and put the load entirely on a header, which needs solid fixing and is not appropriate on every wall.
Frameless Is a Tolerance Question
Frameless glass is fixed directly to the wall with clips and hinges, so it needs the walls to be genuinely plumb and the openings square. Blocking is solid timber fixed between studs so that something can later be screwed to the wall at any point along it. Once the waterproofing and tile are on, adding it means cutting through both, and no fixing made into a hollow wall behind tile is trustworthy in a wet area. The window for this work is a single day during rough in.
Grab Bars, Whether or Not Anyone Needs One
A horizontal run of blocking at roughly waist height along the long wall and beside the entry costs a few dollars in material. It means a properly anchored bar can be added at any time in the future, in the right position rather than in the position a stud happens to occupy. Nobody has ever regretted putting it in.
A Bench Carries Real Load
A wall hung or corner bench has to support a person sitting down heavily on a wet surface. That load goes into framing, not into board, so the support has to be built and the waterproofing detailed around it. A bench added later on brackets through tile is a leak and a failure waiting in the same fitting.
Glass Fixings Follow the Fabricator
Hinge and clip positions come from the glass supplier and they are not evenly spaced. Get the template before the walls close, block accordingly, and photograph everything with a tape in shot so the positions can be found again through finished tile.
Niches Are Framed, Not Cut
A recessed niche is an opening made in the framing with its own head and sill, sloped slightly so water drains out of it, and waterproofed as part of the wall. Cutting one into a finished wall afterwards means breaching the membrane at the worst possible height. Decide the size and the position now, and set it between the studs that are already there.
